Comfrey

Botanical Name: Symphytum x uplandicum

Comfrey is a perennial herb featuring large, hairy leaves and bell-shaped flowers, often found in damp areas like riverbanks and ditches. With thick, fleshy roots, comfrey is known for its healing properties and is traditionally used to treat wounds, burns, bruises, ulcers, and various skin conditions. While older leaves can be cooked and eaten, dried comfrey leaves and roots are commonly used to reduce inflammation associated with sprains and broken bones. However, caution is advised when applying comfrey to deep wounds, as its rapid skin-healing properties may trap infection within the wound.

Cultivate your own organic plant food, mulch, and compost booster! Often hailed as a “wonder plant,” comfrey offers numerous benefits and uses. Its leaves can be soaked in water to create “comfrey tea,” an outstanding plant food and liquid fertilizer, particularly effective for tomatoes and potatoes.
